LATE APRIL FOOLS

Kinja'd!!!

Left rear seatbelt decided it didn't want to retract anymore. After pondering tying it in knots around my six year old, I just let her sit in the middle rear seat, since it too has a shoulder belt.

Must be a common issue since Toyota won't warranty belts for life like Subaru and Honda do, and junkyards/ebay around here were slim pickins'. I doubt I can fix it (it made a nasty noise when I was yanking on it, trying to get it to go back in) and since it's such a pain in the ass to get to, I got one coming from a salvage yard just in case.

Sucks, this is the first time this car has let me down.

Oh I don't know how many cars I strap the belt on and think 'why is this twisting across my chest... oh great, the buckle is backwards.' and I have to fix it before going anywhere. I'm surprised at just how many cars are like this!

Seatbelts are always tough to find in salvage yards for a couple reasons.

The interchange software doesn't cover the parts interchanges on them so they have no way of looking up exactly what fits what, so most of them don't even bother trying to sell them.

Junkyards use seatbelts for everything they need a strap for. Need to pull an engine? Tie a seatbelt to it. Need to move a truck axle around with a forklift? Tie a seatbelt to it. Need to ship something large? Strap it to the pallet with a seatbelt. Within a couple months of hitting the yard pretty much all our cars had the seatbelts cut out of them for this.

That, plus when I hear from the yard "Man, why is it ALWAYS the left rear???" I know I'm in trouble.

Because that's where everybody puts the baby seat, and based on your photo there I'm sure you know what kind of hell on the seatbelts it is putting those things in.

That's what our baby seat is in the middle of the back seat of our cobalt Coupe

So I had no idea Honda has a lifetime warranty on seat-belts. This is good news, because I just started looking into fixing the civics belt that does not retract.

Thanks for the unintended info!

And the middle seat is supposed to be safer anyway right?

In the back? I dunno, I'd rather have the back of a front seat to smack into, or a door next to me in the event of a T-bone.

They do. My ridiculously high mileage '91 DX hatch driver belt quit retraction a few years ago and I drove it to nearest dealer and asked nicely about wtf to do about it. They said they'd order it and 3 days later they called me back to schedule an appt so I drove up there again and about 30 minutes later a new belt system was installed and has not given further grief.
